Restoring Antique Silver Candlesticks: A DIY Guide

In the last few years, I have been leaning toward ensuring that I'm living more environmentally friendly. From buying most of my wardrobe preloved on sites like Vinted, and buying second-hand furniture through to finding hidden treasures at the auction house (which happens to be on my doorstep). Previously, I lived my life through trends and always wanted the latest "things" but it just doesn't excite me in the way that it used to and I'm a sucker for making my money go further. Today,  I'm thrilled to share with you a passion project of mine: restoration. It's something my Grandad and GreatGrandad both did religiously, we would take broken items to them and give them an hour or two pottering in their garages/sheds they would always bring back our very much loved items fixed and looking like new. One area that I'm really interested in is restoring silver, be it jewellery or items like Candlesticks. Whether you've inherited a set from generations past or stumbled upon a hidden gem at a flea market, bringing life back to these exquisite pieces can be a fulfilling endeavour. So, roll up your sleeves and let's dive into the world of DIY restoration of items such as silver candlesticks!

Step 1: Assessment and Cleaning

Before diving into the restoration process, it's essential to assess the condition of your antique silver candlesticks. Look for any tarnish, dents, or scratches that may need attention.

Tools and Materials Needed:
Soft cloths
Mild dish soap
Warm water
Silver polish
Silver cream
Soft-bristled brush
Microfiber cloth

Instructions:Start by gently cleaning the candlesticks with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth to remove any surface dirt or debris. For stubborn tarnish, use a silver polish or cream following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the polish using a soft-bristled brush, working it into the crevices and intricate details of the candlesticks. Once the tarnish is removed, rinse the candlesticks thoroughly with warm water and pat dry with a clean cloth. For added shine, buff the candlesticks with a microfiber cloth until they gleam.

Step 2: Repairing Damage

If your antique silver candlesticks have minor dents or scratches, fear not! With a little patience and the right techniques, you can restore them to their former glory.

Tools and Materials Needed:
Jewelers' hammer
Sandpaper (various grits)
Metal polish
Cotton swabs
Rubber mallet (for larger dents)

Instructions: For small dents, gently tap the affected area from the inside using a jeweller's hammer until the dent is minimized. Sand down any rough edges or scratches with fine-grit sandpaper, working in a circular motion until smooth. For deeper dents, place a soft cloth over the area and carefully tap it with a rubber mallet to reshape the metal. Once the damage is repaired, polish the candlesticks using a metal polish to restore their lustre.

Step 3: Preservation and Maintenance

Now that your antique silver candlesticks are looking as good as new, it's essential to take steps to preserve their beauty for years to come.

Tips:Store your candlesticks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent tarnishing. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the silver finish. Regularly polish your candlesticks to maintain their shine and prevent tarnish buildup. Consider investing in a silver storage bag or anti-tarnish strips to further protect your candlesticks when not in use.

By following these simple steps and taking proper care of your antique silver candlesticks, you can enjoy their beauty and elegance for generations to come, just as my granddad and great grandad have done.
