Why Summer Is The Best Time For Home Improvements

When you think of the right time to carry out home improvements, summer might not make the top of the list. It’s hot, for one thing, which can make the work feel much harder than it needs to. Plus, this is the time of year when people traditionally take some time for themselves, and who wants to give up their holidays to have their home renovated instead?

Yet the truth is that there are actually a number of reasons why renovating your home in the summer months is better than any other time of the year. This can come as a surprise, but if you have plans to make some changes to your home this year, read on to understand why you might be better off waiting a few months until the summer arrives.

If you like the idea of DIY when it comes to your home improvements, that’s no bad thing. It will potentially save you money (as long as you know what you are doing, because otherwise you’ll have to pay more to have the problems put right), and you’ll certainly get a great sense of satisfaction from the work you put in.

However, not everyone wants to DIY, and many would rather pay experts to do the work. It costs more, but it means there will be a professional finish, and it will likely take less time as well, which means less disruption.

If this latter idea is the route you want to go down, you might have better luck finding professionals to help you during the summer months. This is because there is often less work for the professionals to do during the summer. Most people will be of the opinion that spring or autumn, and perhaps winter if it’s not too close to Christmas, will be best, so this is when the people you might want to hire will be booked up, possibly many months in advance. In the summer, however, due to holidays and the general feeling that it’s not the right time to do this kind of work, you may be able to get excellent contractors to complete your project quite easily. This will save you having to wait too long, and it means that you won’t try any DIY if you’re not comfortable doing so.

You’ll Be Ready For Christmas

Have you ever looked around your home and told yourself that this year (or next), your Christmas celebrations will be bigger and better? You’ll have guests over, and maybe they can stay; you’ll create a wonderful feast; you’ll play games and have fun. Then you realise that your house is just not going to be ready for any of that, and instead you do the same thing you always do, and feel slightly deflated afterwards.

No one wants to feel like that, and everyone should have the Christmas they plan. This is why summer renovations can be ideal. Not only will the work not run into the Christmas period, which will always be stressful, but you’ll also have had time to get used to the new look of your home – potentially the new layout if you’re having some major work done. You will personally be more comfortable in the building, and this will mean your guests will as well. Plus, there won’t be that new paint smell or the gritty feel of new plaster in the air, ensuring everyone can settle and enjoy the festivities.

You Can Go Out

Renovations in your home are going to be disruptive. Even a new coat of paint means you can’t use that room for a few hours, and for more extensive changes, like putting in a new kitchen or bathroom, for example, or turning a loft into a bedroom with an ensuite, your entire life will be turned upside down. All the things you’re used to might be moved around, and that disruption can be hard to deal with. Plus, the mess of a renovation isn’t much fun to be around either.

The good thing about choosing to have work done in the summer is that you can go out and leave the problems behind (assuming you’re hiring professionals, that is). Although running away from your problems is not the usual way to do things, in this case, it’s the perfect solution to help you stop getting so stressed. When the weather is good, you (and anyone else who lives with you, including children) can go outside for a walk or to the park. You can go for a drive or a bike ride. You can get out of the house and explore or head to a theme park or local farm. In other words, if you don’t have to be at home while renovations are being carried out, you don’t have to be, and in the summer there is a lot more to do.

If you are having the same work done in the winter, there will be fewer places to go, and you might not like the idea of having to go out in the cold anyway. This can lead to stress and problems that wouldn’t exist in the summer months.

Fewer Delays

When you have decided that home improvements have to take place, it won’t matter what your plans are; sometimes problems come up that cause delays. Although there may still be problems during the summer that delays things, such as sickness or supply issues, there will be far fewer of these problems to contend with.

Compare the issues that winter would bring, for example. If the weather is bad, that could mean delays if you’re having any roofing or exterior work done. It might even mean delays even if you’re only having interior work done because the contractors may need to be outside to do some of their work. If they can’t work due to snow or rain, you’ll have to wait until the weather clears up. Another delay could be down to the ground; if it is hard as it will be in the winter, any digging that needs to be done will take longer, if it can be done at all.

It’s also easier to check that things are going well in the summer, speeding things up if need be. You might be installing a wall mounted air conditioner without outdoor unit – the perfect thing to do to make your summer more comfortable – and you can start using it right away because the weather will call for it. If you do this, you can see immediately whether it’s working in the right way and whether it’s installed in the right place, and if any changes need to be made, they can be done sooner rather than later.

Longer Working Hours

Some people like the winter because it gets dark earlier, and you can be snug and cosy inside. That does sound nice, and it isn’t a bad thing. However, if you are having work done in your home, it’s not so helpful. For one thing, the contractors will have to stop working potentially many hours earlier than they would in the summer when the nights stay lighter for longer. Secondly, if you want to relax in a snug and cosy way and you have workers around you or your home is unfinished, it’s going to be hard to do so.

One of these reasons alone would be enough to show that summer is a better time for home improvements, but when added together, it’s proof positive that you need to plan for the summer months when it comes to home improvements.
