The benefits of reading for children

There is no doubt that the development of reading skills is important for the success of children in school, work, and life in general. Reading is something that allow us to be transported into different worlds through pages and words. It is one of the easiest ways to understand new characters and cultures. Reading is widely practiced by many to acquire new words and phrases and get in touch with a range of emotions. The effects reading has on child development alone is drastic which is why professionals advise for it to be incorporated into a child’s daily routine from as early as birth. Below is some advice on the benefits of reading for children.

Helps children develop empathy

When we read a book, we put ourselves into the shoes of the character, experiencing and understanding everything they do. In turn, this actually helps develop empathy and allows us to get in touch with our own feelings too. Emotional development is a skill that children need to develop as early as possible to be successful in life. Through the art of reading, children can use this new understanding to emphasise with people in the real world. Given that children are not aware of all emotions, reading is a great way to introduce it into their lives and give them a better understanding.

Improves literacy skills

Reading is something that should be practiced with children from birth. Through the simple act of reading out loud with your child, they will gain simple skills that will be required when they begin to practice reading independently.

Better concentration

Regular and consistent reading will eventually have a knock-on effect on a child’s concentration abilities. Given that they will be reading for long periods of time, they will understand how to sit still in one place and listen to both parents and teachers.
