How to adapt your flooring to different seasons

Choosing the right flooring for your home can seem light a daunting task. You may be changing the flooring in one room or several, but this can still be a big job in either case. Of the many challenges when choosing a new floor is working out how your flooring will work in your home at different times of the year. There are practical and aesthetic considerations to take into account, and when you have a family with young children, you also have to think about how the choices will impact them.

With all of this in mind, below are some tips to help you adapt your flooring to different seasons of the year, so hopefully, whatever new flooring you choose, you can see that it's possible for it to feel great all year round.

Spring

The weather in spring is historically difficult to predict, so making decisions on if you need to warm your floors up or cool them down can change very quickly. One thing you can do is to make some styling decisions that may bring some new colours into your home. If you have a fairly neutral colour scheme at home, you can get creative with adding some fresh spring colours to your home.

If there is some cooler weather, put down some rugs to break up the space on your floor that could be cold. If you're doing this in your living room, consider placing a rug under your sofa that sticks out around it. When you are sitting on your sofa and maybe have your feet on the ground, they won't be on a cold floor, but rather a nice warm rug. You can choose a rug with bright spring colours to help add a splash of colour to your home. Doing this in your bathroom with your bathmat is also a good idea.

Summer

We all hope that the summer months bring hot weather, but while many of us are still spending a lot of time inside, keeping our homes and floors cool is vitally important. You can use some flooring materials, like ceramic tiles, to create floors that will stay cool when it's warm outside, but this leaves you needing to heat them at other times of the year (which we will cover later). However, regardless of the kind of flooring you have, there are several ways you can cool your floor.

Flooring will heat up when exposed to natural light, so if you know your room floor gets really warm during the day, consider fitting blinds to your windows to help block out some of the natural light and keep your floors cooler. If you're set on having carpet in your home, to keep it cooler in the summer months, go for a shorter pile. Also, choose a lighter colour, and this can help keep it cool.

Autumn

One of the most iconic features of autumn is the changing colours outside. For this reason, many of us choose to spend a lot of time outside enjoying countryside walks, but this can be worrying for our flooring, considering the mud and dirt that you can bring back on our shoes. Investing in a high-quality doormat that will be able to help remove dirt from your shoes is vital to keep your floors looking their best in the autumn months. Add a mat like this inside your front door and remember to wipe your feet when you come inside!

Winter

Many of us worry about your flooring feeling cold during the winter. The thought of stepping out of bed on a cold winter morning onto a cold floor is not something that appeals to many of us. While carpet would seem like the most obvious solution to this problem, it is not suitable for many rooms in your home, such as the kitchen and bathroom. For these rooms, the material used is often vinyl tiles. While vinyl flooring provides a warm and comfortable feeling underfoot, this can be enhanced by installed underfloor heating. Using either water or wires, heat is generated and radiated up through the flooring to provide a lovely warm feeling underfoot. This can be installed in any room in your home and is ideal for those cold winter days.

Hopefully, the tips above help you adapt your flooring to the different seasons of the year and help you create a comfortable and enjoyable space at home you can enjoy 365 days a year!
