Creating More Space In Your Home When Moving Isn't An Option

When you move into your first home. There’s so much room to put things. Fast forward a few years, and a few kids and your house is now bursting at the seams. Every cupboard and draw is full, boxes of stuff are piling up in the garage. Living in a cluttered, cramped home isn’t good for our mental or physical health.

What can you do to get more space? Sure, you can channel your inner Marie Kondo and start decluttering and organising. It’s a great way to keep on top of things. What family does need is space. Space to live, space to keep things.

You might not want to move home, so it’s time to get creative.

Convert Unused Spaces

There are a number of places in your home that you can upgrade to increase your living or storage space. The loft is a primary area that’s underused. If your loft is big and has the height, you can think about converting it into a bedroom or playroom for the kids.

Smaller lofts are still absolutely great for storing things, hire a company like Instaloft to board out the floor and add lighting and access.

Many newer builds often have garages attached. Modern garages are quite small compared to the size of today’s cars. If you always park your car on your drive and use your garage for storing other things, then you can look to convert your garage to a usable room. It could be used as a second reception, office or downstairs bedroom. Whatever works for your family.

The space under your stairs is also wasted space. There are specialist companies that can convert this space into a storage cupboard.

Get Creative With Furniture

When space is at a premium, you don’t have the luxury of having furniture for purely decorative purposes.

Be clever with your furniture and choose items with storage built into them. There are beds that lift up to allow you to store linens and clothes underneath them, coffee tables that have drawers, footstools that double up as storage boxes.

If you have traditional freestanding wardrobes, you can increase your space over three times by investing in floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes. Fitted wardrobes are great for unusually shaped rooms and come with a variety of clever fittings to store clothes, shoes and accessories.

Get Serious With Storage

Invest in storage boxes and racks for your cupboards and drawers. That way, you can file everything away neatly, making it less likely that you’ll lose things or buy duplicates.

If you have a storage cupboard or utility room, install shelves that go from the floor to the ceiling to wring every last drop of storage space in your home.

Use Your Outside Space

If you have a garden or yard, then you have the potential for extra storage. A garden shed can be used to store tools, bikes and outside toys. If you don’t have room for a shed, then a secure outside storage box can be used to store equipment.
